The Stelios Environmental Centre in Pedoulas was originally established on the 1st of November, 2005 by the village of Pedoulas, with the co-operation and assistance of the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute. This is the first Environmental Centre of its kind subsidized by the government of Cyprus, which covers all operating expenses. Dr.Aravella Zahariou has established and runs the Centre day-to-day.

Housed in the village's former elementary school, the Centre offers lessons on the subject of environment - both inside and outside the Centre - by experienced teachers. Pedoulas offers beautiful landscapes and varied flora and fauna, unique to the island of Cyprus. Students come from all levels of elementary, secondary and university institutions in both Cyprus and from abroad. At least 5,000 students per year take their environmental studies here, some spending 1-3 days at the boarding house of the Centre. A basketball court, football pitch and volleyball ground was also recently added.

In October 2010, through the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou - the founder of easyJet and the chairman of easyGroup - donated 200,000EU towards the Laboratory completion and towards other needs of the Stelios Environmental Centre in Pedoulas. The village is the birth-place of his father, Loucas Haji-Ioannou.
